In 2030, several terrorist organizations in central Africa had acquired nuclear weapons to "cleanse the entire world." While the initial idea was to nuke major cities worldwide, their plan backfired, and the nukes went off in the nations they were festering in. Within a few seconds, all of Central Africa was turned to glass, with several countries in northern and southern Africa having their entire populations wiped out within the hour. 

 

The entire continent is now a radioactive wasteland with very little life other than mutated creatures and a small number of scattered survivors trying to live each day. While the rest of the world had seen much fewer natural disasters since the war, the wasteland seemed to have a large rise of natural disasters from earthquakes, droughts, floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes. The only countries in Africa with "livable" conditions were Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Madagascar. Though these countries could remain in a "stable" state, crime and violence were still very high. 

 

Because of the One Hour War, all 5 of the super nations enabled strict rules on who can enter and leave their borders. Thankfully, mutual trust was made between the Supernations allowing trade and traffic to continue but with significantly increased measures on regulations and policies. 

 

What caused the nukes to go off without ever being launched was determined to be the incompetence of the terrorist leaders. However, it was something much worse.
